Finally an Update
Sorry it has been so long since the last update. For those of you who check the blog every day we will try to do better. Hopefully we will get a few more people posting so we can keep it more up to date.
Grandpa, (your Grandpa Schlappi), is doing about the same. Healthwise, he is well and is eating pretty good. He enjoys the chair that your dad purchased with Grandpa's funds. It's one of those that will raise you up nearly to your feet. It's also a recliner where he takes his afternoon naps. I bought him one of those snuggies that you see on T.V., (a blanket with sleeves and pockets...royal blue of course for BYU), and he enjoys using that since he always seems to be cold. He uses it for his naps and when he sits in the wheelchair.
As far as mobility, it doesn't look good. We had hoped that the P.T.'s would be able to teach him how to move from his bed to his wheelchair or from his wheelchair to a regular chair. The Therapists made your Dad sign a paper that said therapy was being dis-continued because he was resisting when they tried to give it to him.
As far as being lucid or "with it", that comes and goes. I feel that he has made progress in that area the past two weeks. He still has days though, when he is out of it.
On Friday March 20th, Dad and I had a special experience together. His mind was very clear and our conversations were very "with it". After visiting for about 30 minutes, I was prompted to offer him a comfort blessing. He was very willing. The spirit was strong and he heard and understood every word. He had tears in his eyes when I finished. Another prompting came. I asked him if he would give me a "Father's blessing". He said "I can do that". He was in his wheelchair, so I knelt down by his side and he placed his hands on my head and with no help what so ever, he said the correct ordinance requirements for the blessing and gave me a very beautiful, specific, blessing. A general authority couldn't have given me a better blessing for my needs that day than my Dad did. I know the Lord spoke through him because things that were said and that I needed to hear, only the Lord knew. I had not prompted Dad as to what I needed in the blessing, the Lord literally spoke through him. We were both crying when he finished. Of all the blessings he has given me throughout my life...I will never forget that one!
I hope all is well with you and your families. Keep checking the blog!
Love,
Uncle Roger/Dad/ brother/ whatever our relationship is.

Hello All,
It's Amy. There are no pics on here so I've decided I'll post some up. Sunday the 28th of December, my parents were going to see Grandpa and I wanted to see him too, I've wanted to see him while he's feeling well so I can have some good memories of him. So Dave and I decided to go with my parents. We got engaged the Monday before Christmas (see my blog for more details, if you'd like) and Grandpa hadn't seen the ring or heard about it so we went to tell him. We got there at dinner time, so after he was done eating we went over to the couch to sit down and chat with Gramps. As we got talking about things Grandpa said something about Dave borrowing me for a little while, Dave said "well Grandpa that's what we came her to talk to you about, I was wondering if I could borrow her for a little longer than that." I then said "Grandpa, Dave asked my dad if he could have my hand in marriage and he said yes, so we're engaged now." Grandpa did the funniest thing ever he raised his hand up to his head, kinda like this but with a smile on his face, (it's not a very good pic) for about a minute. It was so funny.
So then I showed him the ring and we talked a little more, he seemed pretty excited for us. Saturday, January 10, 2009
Updates on Grandpa
I’m sorry I did not update last night, so I am a day behind but I will try to get everyone back up to date. Yesterday morning(January 8th) he was not feeling so great his blood pressure was worse and the Doctors had some concerns about his Kidneys. They decided to do a CT scan to get a better look at what was going on. (I’m not sure on the results of the scan) Because of his blood pressure dropping they were having a hard time keeping him comfortable with the pain medicine they could give him so they moved him to the ICU were they could give him a different type of medicine that is better for his blood pressure. He seemed to be feeling better as the afternoon went on but didn’t get much sleep during the night.
I was talking to my Dad last night on his way to the Hospital and he shared some neat things that happened on Wednesday. My parents (Roger& Alane), Kent & Shannon and Larry & Pat were at the Hospital meeting with the Doctors trying to decide the best thing for Grandpa. After they had talked with the Doctors Kent gave a family prayer that really helped to invite the spirit there to help them know what choices they should make in Grandpa’s behalf. The brothers (Kent, Roger & Larry) had talked and they felt that Grandpa had lived a good long life and if he was ready to go back to his Heavenly home his family was okay with that. They wanted Grandpa to know how they felt so in the blessing that Roger gave him he told Grandpa that if he felt it was time and if Heavenly Father was ready that they were okay with him returning home with Grandma and Carolyn. He also said that if it was not his time to go that he would be blessed with the strength to have surgery. He blessed him that he would be able to sleep and that Heavenly Father would ease his pain with the help of medicine. My Dad said you could really feel that the spirit. After the blessing Grandpa was alert and awake so each of his Son’s and their wife’s stood by his bed and had a special moment with Grandpa. As they were getting ready to leave Grandpa would say things like “Honey I want to go with you” the Brothers felt as if he was talking to Grandma.
We are not sure what the next few days will bring but, what we do know is that we have the blessing of the gospel in our lives. And our Heavenly Father has a plan for each one of us and he knows the desirers of our hearts and he will watch and bless Grandpa as well as his family during this time.
A New Update
Today (January 9) I was able to go see Grandpa I wasn’t too sure how he would be doing or if I was ready to see him in that situation. When I walked in his room I felt a clam feeling about his room. He was lying asleep peacefully in his bed I didn’t want to wake him but wanted to tell him I was there and that I loved him. As soon as I talked to him he looked up at me and looked right in my eyes, I asked if he knew who I was and he shook his head yes. Then closed his eyes again and listen to me talk to him. I could tell he was listening because after I said something he would try to talk back to me. I didn’t stay long because I knew he didn’t get much sleep the night before. As I left I talked to his nurse he said that Grandpa had been doing quite well today for a man of his age. They were able to take the oxygen off and he was keeping his oxygen levels at about 96% or higher when he was awake and at 95% or higher when sleeping which is a normal oxygen reading. He also said that his blood pressure was better today and they didn’t need to give him as much medicine as they had before to keep it under control. They check his kidneys and they looked good they also found a better way to move his leg to take some of the pressure of his hip so between that and the pain medicine he was able to be comfortable. His nurse also told me that they had him on some pain meds but not a high enough amount that he should be that sleepy he was able to work with his body and inner strength to control his pain enough to get some much needed rest.

A Quick up Date
They did some test today to see if Grandpa is physical strong enough for surgery. They got the test back and as of right now the Doctors don’t believe that he is strong enough to live through the surgery. So they have decided to give him a few days to hopefully become stronger and push the surgery off until Sunday. Then they will test again in a few days. After they receive the results of the 2nd set of test if they feel he is strong enough to make it through the surgery they will operate Sunday afternoon. Talking to my Dad tonight he told me that Grandpa is in a lot of pain and that the Hospital is trying to make him as comfortable as they can but it is a balancing act trying to get him out of pain and not get him so comfortable that his blood pressure drops.
We Love you Grandpa and will keep you in our prayers!!!!

Prayers for Grandpa
Today Grandpa fell getting out of bed and thought he had hurt his foot or his leg. He was in so much pain they could not move him and had to call the ambulance to take him to the hospital. He had some x-rays taken to night and they found that he has a broken hip. (Not the same one he has broken before) They are planning to do surgery tomorrow as long as he is strong enough to go through with it. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers over the next few weeks. I am going to visit him in the next few days and will try to keep the blog up to date on his progress.

My Favorite moments with Grandpa
I Just wanted to do a little post about my Favorite memory with Grandpa.First of all this is my new Favorite Picture of Grandpa. We took this a few weeks ago when we went to visit him on his birthday.
While we were there Grandpa was playing with Angelyn's youngest boy, Spencer. Watching him with Spencer made me think of my Favorite child hood memory.
I always LOVED it when Grandma and Grandpa would come over for Sunday dinner. While we waited for dinner to be ready Grandpa would put us on his knee and sing a cute little "dola dola dola do ta do"song. We LOVED it and made him do it over and over again, I am sure his legs were sore when they left to go home.
It was a really tender moment for me to see that he still remembers that song after all this time, what a sweet little man.
